Kai was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan with a cleft lip and palate. He recently accepted a proclamation from Mayor Schewel declaring July as Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month in Durham, presenting his story and advocating for cleft and craniofacial support throughout our area.
At birth, Kai was placed in an orphanage where he had one procedure to close his cleft lip. It wasn’t until 5 years later, that he was adopted into the United States and joined the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Team. Over a span of nine years with the Duke Team, Kai had seven surgeries and multiple orthodontic procedures related to his cleft lip and palate.
