Durham Bulls CommUNITY Heros Game

Aug 22, 2021 @ 5:05pm - 8:05pm

Let’s go to a baseball game!

Friends, family, patients and providers of the cleft and craniofacial community are invited to celebrate and spread awareness.

Our very own Kai Hale has been nationally recognized MiLB’s CommUNITY Hero of the Game!

Details

In honor of cleft and craniofacial awareness month, we’ve reserved a block of seats for the providers, patients, family members and friends of the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Center to meet, connect and enjoy a ballgame together.

There will be lots of fun games for our group to participate in before and during game, so get there early!

An Amazing Honor

The highlight of the game is that our very own, Kai Hale, has been awarded MiLB’s CommUNITY Hero of the Game, one of only 75 awards given across the country!  This honor celebrates those who have gone above and beyond to serve in their communities.

The Durham Bulls will be highlighting Kai’s achievements at the August 22nd game for all to commemorate.  Way to go Kai!

MiLB CommUNITY Hero

Kai was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan with a cleft lip and palate.  He recently accepted a proclamation from Mayor Schewel declaring July as Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month in Durham, presenting his story and advocating for cleft and craniofacial support throughout our area.

At birth, Kai was placed in an orphanage where he had one procedure to close his cleft lip.  It wasn’t until 5 years later, that he was adopted into the United States and joined the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Team.  Over a span of nine years with the Duke Team, Kai had seven surgeries and multiple orthodontic procedures related to his cleft lip and palate.

Hear more of Kai’s motivating story in this 6 min presentation with the Durham City Council.

Smile Together has covered a portion of the ticket price under its community awareness and outreach program.  Please consider donating more to keep this wonderful program going strong!
