Be Different. Be Awesome.

Calling all kid artists connected to the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Team!

We want to see your work and give you the chance to have it displayed in the Duke Children’s Health Center to show how awesome you and your art can be. This is a great opportunity to highlight patients of the Duke team while carrying out our vision of creating a world where all barriers associated with cleft and craniofacial conditions are eliminated and children can achieve their full potential.

What are we looking for?

We want you to bring out all of your creative ideas and find a way to show the world that being different is awesome through your art.

You could submit almost any art that speaks to the theme of “Be Different. Be Awesome.” This could be a self-portrait of you doing something amazing, it could be something more abstract that highlights how differences are strengths, or it could be a picture of someone else who inspires you to do your best regardless of what the circumstances are in life. All entries must have a title that relates the artwork to how being different is awesome.

Entries must be created on 8.5” x 11” paper and submitted as outlined below. If selected, original artwork must be mailed to our committee.

Who is eligible?

This is an opportunity for kids 21 years old and younger to submit original art for showcase. This will be open to all patients of the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Team.

Representatives from Smile Together and the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Team will review submissions and select the top submissions to be displayed in the Duke Children’s Health Center.

How to Participate

You need a parent/legal guardian to give consent and submit your artwork via the form below.

All art must be submitted by May 31st.

Submissions must be hand-drawn (i.e., pencil, marker, paint, etc.). No photography or computer-generated submissions. We look forward to seeing your creativity!

In connection with this submission, I agree that the above-stated artist may be identified as the artist. I waive any right of privacy under HIPAA or other laws that might apply to this identification, and agree to allow the artist's name to be used and agree that the artist may be identified as a patient of the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Center, that the team may be identified in connection with the artist, and that the circumstances of the art creation may be described and discussed. In the event the art is selected for public display, we agree that photographs of the artist may be used in the exhibit or in other marketing and descriptions of this organization. I hereby affirm that the above-stated is the sole owner of said art, it is original work, that it has never been published, and that there are no contractual or other arrangements which would interfere with or prevent the above-mentioned assignment or transfer of all my right, title and interest in said material. I hereby release any rights, title and interest in and to the original art described and provided, including, without limitation, the copyright therein and/or the right to federally register the copyright therein, and any and all renewals and extensions of any such copyright any country in the world. I also give my consent to indemnify and hold harmless Smile Together, and their respective directors, officers, agents and employees and assigns, against and from any and all claims, liability, loss and damage, including reasonable attorney’s fees, caused by or arising wholly or in part, directly out of my inability to prove the validity of what is stated above.

When will I hear about my submission?

All families that submit art will receive an email from Smile Together by June 14th if they have been selected to have art displayed in the Duke Children’s Health Center. The original art pieces must be mailed or brought to us immediately thereafter — please keep your art in a safe and accessible place! More instructions will be given at that time.
